Make it Simple, Make it Fun, Make it Matter

The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.
— Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

August Begins…

…and I think of one of my favorite books, Tuck Everlasting. I want to revisit Winnie Foster and the Tuck family in the little town of Treegap. The author, Natalie Babbitt is one of my mentor-makers. Her work always inspires me to keep writing, drawing, painting, and quilting. Through Tuck Everlasting, she reminds me that It’s all about being part of the ever-evolving whole circle of life and enjoying the journey, one day at a time.

From the top of that metaphoric Ferris wheel, I’m thinking about my year so far and imagining new possibilities for the months ahead.

Make Today Matter

...I have at last learned that it is not what we get out of life but what we put into it that makes or mars it.
— L.M. Montgomery, from Selected Journals, vol. 5:153 quoted from a letter written in 1907

Make it simple. Focus on today.

Make it fun. Play with blocks.

Make it matter. Create in courage and in joy. Bring love to the table.

Evening Reflections

It doesn’t matter how much you love someone. What matters is that they know it.

As the sun sets, I reflect on the details of the day. Take time to celebrate moments of making.

Set the table for tomorrow, by imagining how you can bring more LOVE to the table.

Sew many memories

What you hold in your hands for me
Dear life

Love will change you
No matter if you stay with them
You’ll never be the same again
You’ve shown me magic
Highs I’ve never felt before
Memories that I thank you for
From deep in my soul
